Many brands assume "100% cotton" guarantees quality. In reality, cotton quality varies dramatically based on staple length, ginning method, and yarn spinning technique. Modal fabric quality is governed by a thread count grading system that most brands β and many manufacturers β do not fully understand. Unlike cotton, where "thread count" refers to threads per inch, Modal's count system refers to yarn fineness: the higher the number, the finer the yarn and the softer the fabric.

But fabric becomes thinner, and 100s count requires special care β many brands pair 80s-100s Modal with a Lyocell outer layer in dual-layer designs to maintain structural integrity.
Thread count and fabric weight (GSM) are independent parameters. A 60s count Modal can be woven at different GSM levels. For underwear, 140-180 GSM is the typical range regardless of count. When specifying Modal to your manufacturer, always provide both count and GSM β a 60s/160GSM specification is more precise than "60s Modal."

The generic name for the third-generation regenerated cellulose fiber produced via the NMMO (N-Methylmorpholine N-oxide) solvent spinning process. Lyocell can be produced by any manufacturer. The fiber is classified as "regenerated cellulose" and must be labeled as such (or as "lyocell") on textile products in most jurisdictions.

Order sample yardage for testing. Before committing to bulk, order 5-10 meters of sample fabric.
